Teaching.
Week commencing 16/1/17
This week I tried to use pluckers in two of my lessons.
I was surprised at how well it worked.
Plickers is a great AFL tool. It involves each student having a unique QR code. A multiple choice question is displayed on the board the students can then answer A,B,C or D without the other students seeing their answers. It allows the teacher to scan the class with their smart device and assess the students understanding. An advantage of pluckers is that the teacher can see who understands the questions and who doesn't but the students do not need to know who does or does not.

Week Commencing 9/1/17
This week I have been to Nrich on the first of the three training sessions to be an Nrich ambassador. We spent the day at the centre of mathematical sciences in Cambridge university doing maths. As a maths teacher you would think that I spend most of my days doing maths. That is true but not often do you get time to sit down and think about how you are doing the maths and tackling the problems.
My favourite problem from the day was dozens. Can't wait to do this with the students.

Happy New Year
With the new year brings new enthusiasm and renewed energy to teaching and with this you can start to think about the details in your lesson. I have started the new year thinking about my year 10 set, a second set. I was thinking about how I can encorage them to be a bit more adventorous. The idea was suggested by collegues to try a pre starter with them something relevate, something they can do and something that is going to get them started as soon as they enter the classroom. So for this weeks lesson on Circle Theorems I choose to give them an angle sheet focussing on giving reasons. A key skill when it comes to Circle Theorem questions aswell. So I drew one up for them:

This worked really well they could all do it and they were engaged and on task for a good 5 mins while everyone arrived from there previous lesson and it meant the lesson had more ordered start to it.
This also resulted in them attempting more challeging questions by the end of the lesson and questioning me when i did not read the question fully. Although a bit annoyed at myself I was really proud of them.
Same again next week.
